Dr. McCann began his martial arts training in 1972 at the age of 16 under Soke Yuki Koda, director of the United States Yoshukai Karate Association. He received his black belt in 1975 being one of the first Yoshukai Black Belts in the State of Alabama. Dr. McCann has trained under Grand Master Katsu Yamamoto founder of Yoshukai Karate, Master Mike Foster founder of the International Yoshukai Karate Association, Master Ray Nichols founder of Chito-Ryu Yoshukai Karate.
He has also trained in United States Chito-Ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, American Kenpo, Budoshin Jujitsu, and Idai Ryu Aiki Jujitsu. Dr. McCann teaches weapons, Nunchaku, Bo, Sai, Sword and Tonfu, semi knock out and self defense techniques.
Dr. Jim McCann was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame as instructor of the year in 2008. He is the state director for the Independent International Martial Artist Association for the State of Alabama and serves on the board of the I.I.M.A.A. and holds a fourth degree black belt with the I.I.M.A.A. He is a third degree black belt in Shorite Ryu Tai Jutsu and a second degree black belt in U.S. Yoshukai Karate.
Dr. McCann has been teaching U.S. Yoshukai Karate off and on since 1975 as well as Shorite Ryu Tai Jutsu since 2004.His students are top competitors in the U.S. Yoshukai Karate Circuit as well as the Alabama Karate Circuit in fighting, weapons, kata, and semi knock out. In 2008, eight of his students were in the top 10 in the nation in the U.S. Yoshukai Association in fighting, Kata, and weapons as well as seven students in 2009.
Dr. McCann was ordained by Dr. Kenneth E. Hagan, founder of Rhema BibleTraining Center and he holds and doctorate in theology from Life Christian University. Dr. McCann and his wife Becky are pastors and founders of Victory Christian Fellowship, a thriving church in Adamsville, Alabama where their heart’s cry is Changing Families That Change the World.
